Sand Management
Sand Management is a philosophy on the prediction of production of sand, silt, fine from reservoir, estimate its impact to the integrity of sub-surface completion and surface facilities. The compelling impact it has on production can be multi-prong from the necessity to restrict production to combat severe erosion, decline of the production due to blockage of fines at pore space and gravel pack/screen and failure due to damage to the screen & gravel pack.
Sand production can be often restricting the production of hydrocarbon and poses operational issues in handling the facility, leading to increased OPEX and reduced revenue. If not appropriately controlled and managed can become HSE threat especially when operating aged facilities. Sand production can become part and of parcel of operating the matured field. Hence, it is important to understand the production of sand and devise suitable way to minimise the production and remove it from production system.

MULTIPHASE DESANDER CYCLONE SOLIDS-SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY (SANDPRO™)
Uncontrolled sand production poses a major problem for oil & gas operations. It costs operators billion of dollars in loss of production and high facilities maintenance costs.
The risk of production loss can be eliminated by installing a continuous sand/solid separation system. This can be applied near the source of sand production i.e. at wellhead or upstream of production separator vessel.
Removing these solids at or near the wellhead (upstream of the process facilities) offers a number of advantages:
- Protects equipment from erosion damage
- Prevents solids build up in vessels and pipelines
- Prevents sand damaging valve seats
- Overall risk reduction to on production
- Reduces the need for vessel entry
The SandPRO™ Cyclone solids-separation package removes sand from multi-phase well streams applicable for all gas liquid ratios from 100% liquid 100% gas. The SandPRO™ are engineered to ensure maximum operating envelope and separation efficiency.

Micro Coagulation and Micro Filtration for surface treatment.
FineSTICK™ S is solution for chemical fines consolidation and migration control. Acidification of siliceous formations/sand stones releases fine clay/silica particles. The fines can lead to blockage of pores and hence reduced production rate. It also poses flow assurance challenges to be separated from stream. Aid to separate fines from convention separation system such as filter , cyclone desanders and etc.
Mechanism:
- Change of wetting behaviour from oil-wet to water-wet.
- Neutralize Seta potential/ Surface charge
- Weak agglomeration
- Process is completely reversible
- Reactive groups in the FineSTICK™ selectively reacts with surface Si-OH groups of silica and formation surfaces.
- Low impairment. High productivity
Specialty polymer solution for fines migration control for downhole
FineSTICK™ DH is polymer solution specifically designed to create a thin layer of film to subside the fines from being produced. The solution have the capability to agglomerate and attack the fines together. Hence in virtue chain of flow, the fine migration from deep inside the formation will be curtailed.
The deep penetration of the polymer solution is necessary to create a lasting effect of reducing fines production from the well.
- Change of wetting behavior from oil-wet to water-wet.
- Surface charges capitalized for attraction forces
- Cross-linking and binding of clay/sand fines
- Reactive groups in the FineSTICK™ DH selectively reacts with surface Si-OH groups of silica and formation surfaces.
- Low impairment. High productivity
- Longevity up to 20 yrs.
CHEMICAL SAND CONSOLIDATION (POWELSAND™)
POWELGEL-PowelSAND™ is a new technology using microgels with different sizes, which is new proposed on the market by Reservoir Link. The main domains of applications are:
- Water Shutoff/Conformance control
- Sand control
The process uses performed water-soluble microgels, produced in the plant and delivered under liquid (emulsion) or power form. POWELGEL-PowelSAND™ have a remarkable thermal (up to 165⁰C), shear and chemical stability, a narrow size distribution and environmentally friendly (some have been qualified for offshore North Sea applications).
When injected into a formation, POWELGEL-PowelSAND™ adsorb strongly on the rock, thus forming a thick continuous gel-like on pore walls, which improves rock stability and induces RPM effects (Relative Permeability Modification). Actually, POWELGEL-PowelSAND™ can strongly reduce the relative permeability to water, while affecting very little the relative permeability to oil or to gas. They can thus be bull-headed into the whole open interval surrounding the wellbore, with very little risk of well impairment.
